Selective soldering

Perfect and fast soldering of drilled parts.

With an increasing number of PCB panels with drilled (SMT and THT) components, we are able to meet the increased customer demand even better with the ERSA Versaflow selective soldering machine. An automatic conveyor system takes the panels to the machine, where they are loaded with (No-Clean) flux, and soldered to high quality after preheating on both sides (preferred for more complex cavities).

Selective soldering is particularly advantageous for larger batches where solder quality is important, and for parts where traditional manual soldering makes it difficult to heat through the component legs or access. In addition to ensuring consistent quality, it has the added advantage of working cleanly so that no further cleaning (chemical washing) is required after soldering.

With the continuous development of modern insertion machines, there will still be a need to insert and solder traditional components (connectors, power components, transformers, etc.). Manual soldering is highly dependent on the daily performance of operators, so the quality of soldering will not be constant. Thanks to its automatic system, the selective soldering machine is capable of soldering drilled components in a large series with uniform quality and controllable parameters, thanks to its soldering module that can be freely moved in the X-Y-Z direction. After loading the prepared PCB panels, the nozzle applies the flux (solder) according to the program, and after preheating on both sides, the soldering of the parts starts. The process can be monitored continuously with a high-resolution camera, so that the process parameters can be documented for each card. This is important for us, as we produce a lot of medical electronics, which require an exactly repeatable, consistent quality, where the process parameters can be documented and monitored for each card. It is easy to program, which makes our work much easier, as product changes are very frequent in production.

The work area: loading can be automated by means of a panel feeder, the conveyor belt (conveyor belt) stops and clamps the PCB sheet being assembled at each work stage. The flux is applied by the fluxer module, which moves in an X-Y direction, thus allowing the minimum possible amount to be applied only to the area to be soldered. This avoids contamination of the board, thus eliminating the need to wash the panels afterwards. Preheating is provided by infrared radiators, for more complex cards, it is necessary to preheat both sides to ensure proper hole filling, while the upper heating system (hot air) does not damage heat sensitive components (speaker, LCD display). The technological advantage of Versaflow is that the board remains horizontal throughout the entire process, the Z-X-Y direction of the solder bath is adjustable by servo-driven soldering iron. Soldering can be done from any direction, nodes can be soldered one by one or one after the other and with the wider nozzle up to two rows of legs can be soldered at the same time. The controllability offers many new possibilities for precise batch production. The nozzle works in a nitrogen atmosphere, so there is minimal slag formation. All static and dynamic characteristics can be programmed and continuously monitored (such as solder level, wave height, temperature, offset). Maintenance is simple and quick, a wide range of accessories are available, the nozzles are magnetically attached so that replacement is quick and easy.
